1. CERAMICS

Porous ceramic vases allow water and airflow through the pot's sides. This works well with plants that prefer drier soil, while the inverse is true for glazed ceramic pots that restrict water loss.

2. GLASS

Glass vases are chemically stable and safe for plants, and work as good homes for water plants such as the begonia.

3. LENGTH & WIDTH

Slim, narrow-necked vases make wispy, cascading plants stand out, but are difficult to re-pot. On the other hand, wider vases provide stability for taller plants.
